The Lungo Intens is a dark roast coffee from DE. DE, Douwe Egberts, has a rich history of over 265 years and is now a subsidiary of JDE Peet’s. Read more about DE, and their parent company JDE Peet’s, their related brands (L’Or) and how Peet’s was involved in Starbucks in other parts of the site. These capsules for the Nespresso Original line are meant to be brewed as lungo (110 ml, 3.7 oz).
Looks and origin
The coffee is a blend of Arabica and Robusta beans, of which the origin is unknown.
The capsules come in a box-type of packaging, instead of the typical top-opening Nespresso sleeves. The seal logo is featured on the box next to a woman pouring coffee, called the Aroma Lady. There is also a reference to the history of the company: the year 1753 and the town of Joure, the place in the Northern of Netherlands where Egbert Douwes started his first shop. The purple highlight colour is used on both the box – which has a black background – and the capsules – which have a silver background. The variety name is printed on the capsule, together with the colour highlight make these cups easy to identify.
Smell and taste
We keep below notes from the manufacturer in mind when tasting this coffee:
herbal character (…) fruity sweetness
DE site and packaging
intense aftertaste
The coffee has an intensity rating of 8 out of 12. This would imply a score of little over 8 on the Nespresso scale, as the Nespresso scale is up to 13. This would put this coffee in between regular Nespresso flavours MO Indonesia, Stockholm Lungo (both 8) and Cape Town Lungo (10). This seem fitting, although the dark roast might put it up to 9.
The aroma is that of a medium dark roast with earthy and herbal notes. The coffee has a nice viscosity to it, giving it a bit rounder, thicker mouth-feel. There is virtually no acidity but a fair amount of bitterness that remains on the aftertaste which is dry. The earthy and herbal notes from the aroma are present in the taste as well.
The coffee combines well with milk, which fades the earthy notes and gives for a sweeter taste.
